Letter From A Reader

From Ms. Juicy:

I applied to Cal State LA campus as a post baccalaureate student (due to the requirements of the graduate program I had to apply this way). The day I received my acceptance letter, I also received an email from the Graduate studies dept. stating:

“Admission decisions are made by the graduate programs. Admission to the University is contingent upon admission to a graduate program (degree, certificate, or credential).”

Because I never applied to the program itself, I was very confused so I called the Graduate Studies Dept. The guy on the phone (very rude by the way) stated that as of fall 2009, they stopped accepting post baccalaureate students as a part of their budget cuts. Then I got really upset (more at myself than at the school for not doing enough research on the school).

http://www.csumentor.edu/ (the application site) does state because of their budget cuts some campuses are reducing student enrollment but does not specifically state which ones.

The graduate program website needs to be updated as well.
http://www.calstatela.edu/academic/hhs/comd/comd_adm.php It states:

“Students with an undergraduate degree in another field need to first apply to the University to take undergraduate prerequisite coursework and later apply to the Department upon completion (or near completion) of those prerequisites.”

I was placing a lot of blame on myself for not looking deeper into the matter. Until I spoke with other classmates who were experiencing the same problem in other states (Georgia and Iowa) to name a few.

Really I just want to know why? When banks and car companies can receive bailouts, why take away money from schools? I thought education was the key?
